Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As a 5th Grader at Walker Elementary School in West Allis, Liam Thoen has experience personalized learning in the classroom from early on.  He enjoys studying math, science, and engineering and has plans to go on to college after graduation, but like most 11 year olds, he’s still enjoying being a kid and has yet to figure out what course of study he’d like to continue in.  During the school day, he is a Peer Mediator, plays cello in the school orchestra, and studies with the Gifted, Creative and Talented Teacher.  Outside of school, he is greatly involved with his church including being a member of Awana Club and greeting visitors at the Welcome Desk on Sunday mornings.  He also enjoys being an Idea Engineer for Epiphany Learning’s BOTs program.

GETTING TO KNOW LIAM

What is one thing that makes you unique?
I am very analytical.  I always think things through before I do the action.

When did you know you made the right decision attending a non traditional learning environment?
Only a few weeks in I knew I was in the right place compared to other schools. Everyone and everything could relate to me, and I thought I was a unique part of the classroom.

SIMPLE CONNECTIONS

Can you share with us one thing that has been hard in the personalized learning environment?
Sometimes the current materials we are learning can be different than other schools.

PERSONALIZED LEARNING JOURNEY

What is one thing you have really learned about yourself?
I learned how I learn best, which is sometimes being by myself so I can try to figure problems out.

SECRETS TO SUCCESS

What one strategy would you suggest other students that they could apply everyday that would help them be more successful?
Figure out how you learn best.

Imagine that you are standing in a room full of students — just like you when you started your personalized learning journey. They too have fears, worries and doubts as they struggle to find their footing.  What are two to three key things they should focus on to ensure success?
It is very fun and you should not be afraid to switch. If something is challenging, you can always try a different tactic to help you succeed.

i am ME.

Can you share one thing that makes you GREAT?
I always try my best.
