“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”
As the CEO of Epiphany Learning, I am often asked if we are a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Student Information System (SIS). I reply by explaining that Epiphany Learning is a LRMS (Learning Relationship Management System), and usually end up getting a look of complete confusion, with the occasional return of “Oh great, yet another category in edtech.”It’s natural to feel resistant to a new unchartered territory – whether it be in edtech or the pedagogy behind the product. But when I explain to them that it all comes down to fostering relationships with students and creating a more human connection, a light bulb goes off – they have an Epiphany.
The reality is, LRM is not just another edtech category. It’s the key to supporting true personalized learning. LRM is the opportunity to capture the most critical, meaningful and missing data points in the educational equation. For the first time ever, we are really capturing and using learner voice in a meaningful and productive way – in a way that will improve human connection across the educational ecosystem and therefore dramatically improve learning outcomes.
An inspiring quote from one of my favorite TED Talks comes to mind when thinking about the importance of LRM in our schools:
“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” ― Brené Brown
While Brené Brown doesn’t focus her research on children, we can all relate to her message. When we feel heard and valued, we are far more likely to be engaged.
Now imagine every school with increased relationships and human connection for all learners – from teachers, peers, advisers, administration and parents. There is no debate about the proof or research regarding how powerful this concept is – however, before LRM, there was no systematic way to capture learner voice and choice.
And if there isn’t learner voice and choice, there isn’t personalized learning.
